Magnetic Thin Films
Fabrication and characterization of ferromagnetic thin films and multilayers, with emphasis on relationships between processing, material structure, and magnetic response.
01 Deposition & Processing
Thin film growth fundamentally dictates the resulting physical properties. Processes such as high-vacuum PVD and sputtering are utilized to construct specific Co / Co-alloy ferromagnetic systems and multilayers, defining the initial constraints of the material.
02 Structure & Morphology
Observing the physical consequence of the deposition. Characterization techniques (e.g., XRD, XRR, Raman, AFM, SEM/TEM) verify the crystalline organization, layer thicknesses, and surface roughness, ensuring the intended structural state was achieved.
03 Magnetic Response
The macroscopic measurement of the system's physics. Through magnetometry and related measurements (e.g., VSM/AGFM, ellipsometry, FMR, Hall measurements), the magnetic signature of the film—such as its coercivity, anisotropy, and saturation—is quantified.
04 Process–Structure–Property Interpretation
The synthesis of the narrative. By mapping variations in the deposition process to observable shifts in material structure, and correlating those structural states to the measured magnetic response, a complete process-structure-property relationship is established.
